How to Make an Appointment

If you’re interested in working with me as a therapist, then please make an appointment through the client portal. Here you can see all of my availability and schedule accordingly.

The client portal takes you to the secure, HIPAA-compliant, cloud-based electronic medical record system that I use, called Simple Practice. The portal will require you to enter credit card information in order to confirm your identity. No charges will be filed until after we meet.

It is very hard for me to return phone calls promptly. If you have any specific questions that you would like to address prior to your first appointment, please text me at 317-670-8200 or email me at kathy@soaringheartcounseling.com. I do not use encrypted versions of these services, so please use your own judgment when sending me messages.

While I am happy to answer a few questions prior to our first meeting, I do not offer complimentary consultations in person.

If something changes and you no longer want your appointment, please do me and my other clients the courtesy of logging back into the portal and canceling.

After You Request an Appointment

Once you request an appointment, the Simple Practice will notify me of your request. Please allow 24 hours for me to respond during the business week and longer over the weekends. If for any reason you need to cancel or change your appointment, please log back into the portal and do so.

Once I confirm your appointment, you will receive an email from Simple Practice with a link to the portal and a temporary password. By clicking on the link and entering your password, you will be taken to your case file within the system. Here is where you need to complete your initial paperwork BEFORE our first session.

Paperwork

There are FOUR forms to complete: Standard Intake Questionnaire, Informed Consent for Psychotherapy, Practice Policies, and Notice of Privacy Policies. Please complete all forms in the portal before your first appointment.

 

Arriving for Your Appointment

When you arrive, please come upstairs to the second floor waiting room and have a seat. I will come meet you in the waiting room.

There are single person restrooms halfway down each of the four hallways off the waiting room. Feel free to use any of them if you need to do so.

If you happen to still be waiting for me ten minutes after your appointment time (an unusual occurrence), please text me and let me know you are there. Sometimes sessions run long, and I don’t have a receptionist!

The First Appointment

The goal of the first appointment is to exchange enough information to see if we are a good fit as client and therapist. Research shows that up to 90% of the benefits of therapy are directly related to the quality of the therapeutic relationship.

We will talk about what prompted you to make an appointment, go over office policies and procedures, discuss my approach to therapy, and see what works. I see therapy as a collaborative effort between peers, so I will be assessing your situation to ensure that I am the best qualified clinician to assist you.

At the end of the session, we will discuss scheduling future appointments and payment.
